GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS
Breeze-Martin’s Spanish Classes (Amended 9/02)
BY THE END OF MY FIRST YEAR SPANISH CLASS (1A AND 1B) I EXPECT THAT MY STUDENTS WILL:
- Feel brave enough to try to speak a little Spanish when occasion arises within and beyond the school setting.
- Be curious enough to try to understand written or spoken Spanish when occasion arises.
- Want to get to know more about the Spanish-speaking world and take advantage of travel opportunities.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparison of Spanish-language cultures and our own.
- Begin to appreciate the connection between language and culture and how we see the world.
- Want to learn more about Spanish and Latin American cultures.
- Know how to work as member of a team.
- Understand and interpret written and spoken Spanish on variety of topics.
- Be able to engage in simple conversation in Spanish, providing and obtaining information, expressing feelings and emotions, exchanging opinions.
- Be able to coherently speak and write simple Spanish, presenting information, concepts, or ideas to audience of listeners or readers.
- Be able to apply learned structures and vocabulary in new settings and contexts.
- "Get by in Baja" in terms of having needs met, handle emergencies, food, shelter issues.
- Appreciate the challenge of learning another language.
- Have a better understanding of English and how language works.
IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE, STUDENTS COMPLETING THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2A AND 2B WILL BE ABLE TO:
- With patience and the help of a dictionary, read and enjoy popular literary works written in Spanish,
- Know Spanish well enough to be able to take leaps of faith: guess at meanings; apply past knowledge to new verbs, etc.; figure out meaning by context; creatively invent words.
- Express opinions and provide simple support for point of view.
- Write well-developed and grammatically accurate short essays, including: providing examples, cause and effect, process, comparison and contrast, definition, description, narration and persuasion.
- Carry on a simple, comprehensible conversation in Spanish with a native Spanish speaker about everyday activities and events.
- Begin to recognize distinct viewpoints that are only available through the Spanish language and and its cultures.
- Show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using Spanish for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
